6 Ways To Calm Your Interview Nerves

No matter how many interviews you’ve been on, it can still be nerve-wracking to prepare for a job interview. The good news? Feeling anxious about a job interview is perfectly normal. In fact, research shows that your anxiety can be a motivator to do well in the interview process. However, you’ll need to keep your nerves at bay if you want to impress the hiring manager.

There are several ways to calm your interview nerves. Below are 6 ways to do so:

Be well prepared

The best way to keep your nerves under control is by preparing well for an interview. Research what the company does, look up your interviewers, and know your resume. In addition, practice your answers to common interview questions. Being able to anticipate questions, discuss why you are a great fit for the role, and reference what impressed you about the company are all things that will allow you to perform better during the actual interview.

Plan ahead

You don’t want to worry about logistics on the day of the interview, as it will only make you more anxious. To avoid any additional worries, plan for the day of the interview well in advance. Print out any materials you may need, pick out your outfit, and ensure you’ll be able to get to the interview on time by testing out your technology or mapping out your route to the office. This will help you remain composed before the interview, allowing you to put your best foot forward.

Get a good night’s sleep

You want to go into the interview at the top of your game, and to do this, you’ll need to be well rested. Being tired or sluggish right before an interview can make you even more anxious for the upcoming event. Getting a good night of sleep before an interview will help you be alert and personable throughout the interview.

Take deep breaths

Breathing is a classic way to calm any type of anxiety. If your nerves start to build up while you wait for your interview, remember to take in deep breaths. Try breathing in for a count of four, hold for two and breath out for a count of six.  Exhaling longer than when you inhale is a common way to calm your mind and body before a stressful event.

Visualize a successful interview

You might find your mind running wild with negative thoughts before an interview. Instead of imagining the worst, try to visualize nailing your interview questions and impressing your interviewer. Thinking of the interview in a positive light will keep you calm for the actual interview.

Remember there are other jobs out there

Keep in mind that there will be other opportunities during your job search. The job you are interviewing for isn’t the only opening out there, and it isn’t the only opportunity you’ll have. Remembering this during your interview will take the pressure off yourself, allowing you to bring your best self forward when you meet the hiring manager.
