How To Successfully Change Careers

If you’re considering changing careers, it can feel like a daunting, sometimes insurmountable task.

However, when you’re thinking about making a change this big, taking it step by step can help you feel less overwhelmed.

While it can take some time and hard work, you can successfully make the change to find a more rewarding career path, starting with these steps:

1. Evaluate

When thinking about how to change careers, consider your skill set and experience and how that might translate to a new field.

Be sure to keep an open mind—you may want to consider continuing education, or even transferring to a new department within your current organization.

If you’re feeling a bit lost at this early stage, consult a friend or a career counselor who can help you figure out what you need to get started.

2. Plan ahead

Keep in mind that a career change takes effort and a lot of planning.   

As a result, you’ll want to develop a strategy on how you plan to take this leap.

This may include:

  • Taking courses
  • Gaining certifications
  • Seeking advice
  • Updating your resume
  • Submitting applications

Once you make a plan, make sure that you stick to your goals—it takes a lot of hard work, but you can’t give up.

3. Network

When you enter a new field, it’s crucial that you make connections and seek out advice.

In addition to reaching out to your current network, be sure to make an effort to expand your circle and make friends in your new field. 

Try to seek the help of an expert or a mentor that can help guide you through the industry.

You never know who can offer meaningful advice or make a powerful connection!

4. Adjust your brand

Once you feel ready to apply for job openings, keep in mind that your previous resume may not be as effective in your new field.

Spend some time adjusting your presentation in order to showcase the skills and experience that would mean the most to professionals in this industry.

5. Be humble

Remember that when you’re starting on a new career path, you’ll likely have to start at the bottom.

While you may be used to having more credibility, you’ll need to practice being more humble as you work up the ranks.

Not only does this mean admitting when you don’t know something, but also respecting those in the field you can learn from—some of whom might be younger than you.
